John was once half of the Great Old One known as the King in Yellow, also known as Hastur the Unspeakable. Referred to as 'the heart of Hastur', John has since become his own Great Old One and is no longer compatible with the King. He has tied his fate to that of Arthur Lester, chosen a life of 'limited existence', giving up the apathy and distance of being a god.
